Re: Yamaha Sign Face—Illuminated Background & Permit Requirement
Dear Mr. Cook:
Per our recent conversation, please be advised that City Ordinance 401.15 requires sign
permits for all permanent sign installations and sign face replacements, such as the Yamaha
sign face replacement installed to the multi-panel sign structure at Century Power Equipment.
As discussed, City Ordnance does not permit illuminated white backgrounds. The existing
sign needs to be re-addressed so that the white background is fully opaque, when
illuminated, so that no light shines through it- only the letters and logo may be illuminated.
•
Here is the language from 401.15.G.4.k:
k. Internal Lighting. Signs with internal lighting shall include illumination of only
the text and/or logo portion of the message. Back lighting on fabric awnings is
prohibited.
The City has attempted to not take a hard line interpretation of this in all respects. Some of the signs
that have been approved are dark in color and have a slight amount of light that shines through. To
accomplish this, the background needs to be a definite solid color (not white, nor close to
white) so that there is no appearance in the background of white or off-white when it is
illuminated.
Currently the sign has been installed without a permit, with a white background that is a pale
gray-white, when illuminated. The background is too close to white to comply with City
Ordinance.
Please complete the enclosed permit application for a sign and return it to me with a sign
design plan for review. An approved permit and installation is required to be completed no
later than February 16, 2016.
