We were very recently informed of a hearing regarding a local home rental hosted by Martin&
Louise Fenner. The Fenners are generous neighborhood friends and we are writing this in
support of their Scenic Overlook Cottage. We are curious why nearby neighbors we weren't
contacted by the city for input? However,we want to make sure the city is clear that we are
thrilled by the addition of this lovely cottage on our street.
We live a few doors from their home and have never even been aware of when orifthey are
hosting guests;that is how unobtrusive the Cottage is. Given the size(maximum 2 guests)and
the caliber(sophisticated and of outstanding quality)we never expected any problems with their
home business;and we have never experienced excessive noise, traffic, or unwelcome activity.
In fact,we view the cottage as a welcome addition to area lodging options. Previously we've had
occasion to inquire about hotel rooms for visiting guests-and more than once have had difficulty
in securing a room due to events, weddings, and local tourists. We've not yet had occasion to
recommend that guests stay at the Overlook-but we hope for just that opportunity.
Our experience with renting similar properties in other cities when we travel has also made us
fans. Depending on the number of family traveling and the location we prefer, there are
situations when a home rental is preferable to a hotel room-and we appreciate having that as an
option. We would find it unfriendly for a community to prevent these kinds of home based
operations from filling a need that cannot be satisfied by a traditional hotel room or
romantic B &B.
Our opinion is:the more choices, the better. Having many options for the Stillwater-Oak Park
area;an area that continues to grow with the addition of more event centers,a possible live
theatre and increasing overall popularity makes good sense and thriving economics. And a
thriving community should be shared by everyone who works to create an entrepreneurial
enterprise.
It has come to our attention that Council member Chuck Dougherty may have a bias, considering
that he owns both the Water Street Inn, and the Cover Park Bed & Breakfast. Perhaps the
suggestion that he withdraw from the discussion is in order. We hope that our city is bringing this
conversation to the table out of sincere concern to make our community better-and not from any
private agenda that might be a detriment to the warm community spirit that we enjoy in our
neighborhood. Thank you for your consideration.
