HomeMy WebLinkAbout15-10-36 RESOLUTION 15-10-36 A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL FOR THE CITY OF OAK PARK HEIGHTS SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL Whereas, each day over 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers serve in the United States, and; Whereas, over 50,000 officers are assaulted each year and more than 15,000 are injured in the line of duty each year,and; Whereas, in 2014 alone, 126 officers were killed in the line of duty, and; Whereas, in light of the recent negativity directed towards some law enforcement officials in various parts of the United States there is need to recognize the difficult and dangerous career these individuals have chosen in public service to their communities, and; Whereas, as few professions carry such risks as law- enforcement but which is a needed service in our communities, the City believes it remains important to demonstrate that the City is grateful for these individuals willingness to risk their lives to protect others and encourages the community to similarly demonstrate that understanding and support. NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council for the City of Oak Park Heights that it does hereby thank its Police Officers for their service to the citizens and community of Oak Park Heights. The City Council encourages its citizens and community partners to similarly show such support for City Police Officers and other law enforcement personnel and can be accomplished in many ways such as: • See a police officer?Thank a police officer; • Send a card of support to your local police department or state agency; • Share a positive story about a positive law enforcement experience on social media; • Ask children in your community to write letters in support of law enforcement; Participate in Project Blue Light and proudly display your blue light in support of law enforcement; • Thank the officers on your business biltboard/marquee. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council for the City of Oak Park acknowledges the crises of violence directed toward Police Officers and that Officers show great restraint and professionalism while often times putting themselves in danger to protect the citizens of Oak Park Heights and therefore the City of Oak Park Heights does hereby support the creation and passage of legislation at the State and/or Federal levels making assault on police officers a hate / bias motivated crime along with the perpetual renewal of Bulletproof Vest Partnerships and Support Programs for law enforcement and their families.
