Subject: Wal-Mart Landscape Plan and Tree Removal
OPH Staff -
As requested 11/30/05, I have reviewed the landscape plans for the Wal-Mart expansion project. My review is as follows:
1. There is no mention of tree removal or replacement calculations in the set of plans which I have reviewed. There are 3
pages of landscaping information, but no tree removal/replacement calculations. I requested that Wal-Mart amend their
calculations in my memo of 1/4/2005 because their estimation of trees to be removed was 22 trees and I counted
approximately 94 significant trees when I visited the site in January of 2005. I have estimated their tree removal at 8 in.
diameter for the 32 trees on the north, west and east sides of the current building, and 6 in. diameter for the 62
evergreen and deciduous trees on the berm south of the current building. This comes to a total of 628 diameter inches
being removed.
2. The landscape plan now contains more trees than were originally specified for the site. The total diameter inches
proposed to be planted is 627.5.
3. There are as many inches estimated to be planted as estimated to be removed, so there is no tree replacement
requirement, assuming that the number of trees estimated to be planted, and the tree diameters, will be according to the
submitted landscape plan. This will be checked at the time of final inspection of the landscaping.
4. As per sheet C-4.0 "Tree Protection and Clearing" notes and per sheet L-3.0 "Planting Notes", all existing trees and
shrubs which are to be preserved, should be protected with snow fencing during construction.
If you have any questions regarding this memo, please contact me.
