OPH Staff -
I have recently inspected the landscape install ation at the site of the Wal -Mart expansion protect in Oak
Rark Heights. I have the following observations and comments:
1. `f'he larger deciduous trees ash, linden, n aple have not beers planted according to the "Planting I etall"
on the landscape plan, which was approved by the city. The twine at the base of the trunks and the burlap
over the top of the root balls lave Dot been removed as stipulated in the planting detail. The Planting Detail
from the approved landscape plan item reads: "... Remove all burlap and nails from top 1/3 of the ball.
Remove all twine ". The mulch and soil covering the root balls of these trees should be removed, the twine
cut and remo ved and the burlap cut off the tops of the root balls and rcnao ved. The Foot balls should then be
re- covered with soil and then clears no soil) wood clip mulch. A random san of these trees indicates
that all of the larger deciduous trees will probably need to have this done. If any rungs of wire baskets are
visible art time of burlap and twine reniov 1, these should also be cut and remov ed to prevent future root
entanglement or foot mower ha (ards for humans. A random sampling of the flowering crabapples and the
evergreens indicates that these trees coo not appear to have the twine still intact around the bases of the
trunks nor burlap completely covering the tops of the root balls.
2. Shrub beds appear; to ha ve been planted according to the approved plan.
3. The numbers and types of trees and shrubs correlate well to the approved plan and placement of the plant
material is fairly accurate. No additions substitutions of plant material or transplanting are necessary.
4. The planting stock used is of high quality, with good form and few defects and should perform well on
the site. Most plant material appears to be alive and in good condition at this time. Sonic of the .fix. riper
slur - Lzbs in the north parking lot medians have brown. tips from winter burr, but these tips can be pruned off.
5. More mulch is needed over the root balls of the lindens on the cast side of the property, The soil, and in
some cases the burlap, on top of the root ball, , are exposed on these trees. The entire top of the root ball
and some overlap of the area surrounding each planting hole should be covered with 4 inches of wood clip
mulch.
6. Protective tree wrapping, either l .raft paper or f am, should now be removed from the trunks of all shade
and ornamental trees or this n - my cause excessive moisture over the barb and encourage rotting and insect
activity.
7. There is still some smaller construction debris as well as trash on site, especially on south side of propert
between fence and 58th St. and trash blown into planting beds on north side also. This debris /trash should
be picked up and disposed Of.
. There are two dead trees lying on the ground in the SE. corner; of the landscape planting. These should be
removed.
