Public Water Access in Minnesota
• As of 2016 there are 2,895 public water access
sites on Minnesota lakes and rivers;
• Located of federal, state, county, township and
city administered lands.
• Of these, 1,685 are operated by the MnDNR.
• County, city, township and federal agencies
operate the remainder, many through
cooperative agreements with the MnDNR.

Funding Public Water Access in Minnesota
• The PWA Program: land acquisition, facility
development, and facility maintenance/ operations.
• The MnDNR Public Water Access Program is best
defined as "User Pay— User Benefit".
• Funding for all Program Activities is allocated
principally from 3 separate sources:
• State Water Recreation Account
• State Game and Fish Account (Federal)
• Federal Coast Guard Boating Safety Account
