Re: Basement Remodeling Work
Dear Dawn:
I visited your home earlier this week for inspection to the drain tile system installation done by
Complete Basement Systems. While I was there I noted that there appears to have been some
remodeling to basement at some point in time, including electrical and a toilet addition.
I do not find any work permits issued to this home for lower level remodeling, plumbing or
mechanical alteration and did not find reference to a recent electrical permit having been
issued in the State of MN database. The last final inspection sticker in your electrical panel is
dated 12-16-77.
MN State Code requires work permits be issued for remodeling, alteration of plumbing,
mechanical and electrical systems. Without the knowledge of the work scope or inspection, I
have no way of knowing if the toilet has been installed correctly; however, as the area appears,
it is not a conforming bathroom.
Additionally, the electrical work appears to be potentially non-compliant and may present a
safety hazard. While it is possible that you have plans for attending to these items, I encourage
you to contact an electrician to review the work in the basement and correct it so that it is safe.
I further encourage you to see the assistance of a qualified plumber and mechanical person
with regard to those systems in your lower level.
