Johnson; Jim Butler; Scott Richards; Mark Vlierling Cc: Julie Johnson Subject: Xcel Fly Ash Site - Tree Replacement a of 1 OPH Staff - Today met with Sarappo, r • Saenvironmental senior environmental analyst with Xcel Energy regarding the additional tree removal and tree replacement lacement for the final phase of construction at the fly ash la.ndfill west of the 58th St. cul-de-sac. Sharon's memo of 4/5/06 listed the removal of 12 significant trees on the west side of the chain link fence. There are two more oak which are down to the south west of these also have to grading. trees which will a r be removed for radi n . Since all the trees on the west side of that fence will now be removed, it will further compromise screening of the landfill site from the adjoining pay properties. Rather than have Xcel ay a fee 41 in lieu of planting", t think the replacement the p p erg trees should be planted on t Xcel - ra to provide additional screening. Ms. Sarappo and also Y p s trees the area which were planted i n ast years by Xcel and have died due to lack past numerous eeW in the ar.a p - pine (approx. l 2 ft. tall which will need to be moved with. a tree spade o care. There a e also 3 ed p tall) in the path of the ro s oed access road. Consequently, the tree planting and replacement since they are n th p p A .. of the an d deciduous trees which reconm ended consists of replacement of 7 of the evergreen planting of 7 trees as previously died (most g p y on the east side of the trail from the cul de -sac), p and cement for the significant trees being removed in this current phase of construction, repla g transplanting of the 3, 12 f . red pine mentioned above. At the site review meeting 4/5, Mr. Knutson - t 3, 6 ft. "Black Hills" spruce in the area northwest of the trail to replace also stated that they could pla , p screening provided by the large cottonwood i which will be removed in this phase. After planting, the trees should each be watered and mulched with 4-6 inches of wood chip mulch in an area several feet out from sides. Supplemental watering will need to be done for the first season after r o on sad Supplemental to ensure that t the trees tA ees ge t established well. There is ample area to plant trees around the cul- de-sac, including provide the eastern side to rovide sore e screening for the tan house. The species recommended for planting include: river birch, red maple, bicolor oak, bur oak, basswood, honeylocust "Black spruce.
