Re: Porch/Deck Addition
Hi Brenda & Don —
Per Don's call to me, it is my understanding that you will not be working with Greggory Murphy for
your porch/deck addition.
Enclosed and return to you, please find the items that have been left at City Hall with regard to the
project. Each of the items have been voided.
I look forward to working with you folks, at such time you locate a contractor for your project.
Between now and then, please reach out if I can be of assistance.
Sincerely,

Subject: Deck/4-season porch project
Importance: High
Hi Brenda,
I have the most recent stuff from Greg and have been working at getting through the plan today. Unfortunately, I am not
going to be able to finish this today before I have to go out for inspection at 4 p.m. I wanted to let you know that I am
working on it and will get back to it on Friday.
Right now I do know that I have some questions and as such have copied Greggory.
1. Are there load calculations to confirm that the footings/posts are adequate?
2. What is the clearance beneath the new deck and porch from the grade?
3. Are there truss plans?
4. I would like a clear plan on the number and placement of footings.
5. There is not a framing plan included in the information I received.
6. There is a window shown in the 4-season porch. (60x 43)—how tall off the floor is the ledge of the window? It is
operable or safety glazed?
7. I do not see any notes as ledger connection or lateral tension placement.
It was my understanding that the existing patio door at the house would remain and go into the new 4-season porch and
then a door or patio door from that out to the new deck. Please clarify as well the spacing within the new all, so that we
can verify any swing for safety glazing requirements.
Greggory, perhaps we can schedule an appointment early next week to walk through the project and get the paperwork
coordinated and you on the job.
I did tell Don that you folks could go ahead and commence with demolition of the existing deck if you would like. The
existing patio door is to be blocked when the deck is removed and until such time the 4 season porch is constructed for
safety.
Thanks.

Attachments: Building Permit Application.pdf
Importance: High
Hi Gregg,
Brenda has reached out regarding the proposed project at her home for a deck removal and replacement with a deck and
4 season porch. She did leave your drawing with me as well and I paid a site visit to her home.
In order for me to functionally issue a permit for this project I am going to need a permit application, a site plan with
setback distances to rear and side yards, an elevation plan showing the height from the ground to the floor of the
structures, the overall height of the structures, the wall heights and roof pitch for the portch and some other general
information as to project(ie) what is being used for decking, lateral load connection, connection, material for siding the
porch, insulation, any electric or heat to the same and such. What is the plan for dryer vent beneath the new deck? What
is the clear height of the deck about the lower level bedroom?
Please provide me with a detailed plan including elevation and a site plan with your permit application. You may email
these to me. Email is typically the fastest way to reach me right now. I will watch for your information so that we can
work together to get you folks going.
We are currently using the 2020 MN Residential Code. If you need a copy of this Code, it can be viewed on the MN DLI
website.
Thank you.
