CITY OF OAK PARK HEIGHTS
WASHINGTON COUNTY, MINNESOTA
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SEE AMERICA WEEK
WHEREAS, the travel and tourism industry in the Greater Stillwater area is vital
to our economic stability and growth and it contributes substantially to its cultural and
social well being. Travel is one of our most fundamental freedoms. Every citizen
benefits from travel and tourism. The travel and tourism industry substantially enhances
our personal growth and education, while promoting intercultural understanding and
appreciation of Oak Park Heights' history, geography, and culture; and
WHEREAS, travel and tourism is one of America's largest service exports
providing a trade surplus of $4 billion last year. It is one of the nation's largest
employers with a total of 7.3 million jobs — that is one in every eight people. Including
the $93 billion spent in the U.S. by international visitors, tourism generated $645 billion,
providing $100 billion in tax revenue to local, state, and federal governments. Without
the tax revenue generated by tourism each U.S. household would have paid $923 more in
taxes last year. Spending by resident and international travelers in the U.S. averages $1.6
billion a day, $68 million an hour, $1.1 million a minute, and $19,000 a second.
• WHEREAS, in the Twin Cities metro area along the leisure & hospitality
industry gross sales were $6.7 billion, with a gross sales tax of $401 million, thus
providing an estimated 147,000 jobs.
