BED & BREAKFASTS -- BASIC REQUIREMENTS
1. Proper zoning for the B & B must be demonstrated prior to plan review.
2. Bed & Breakfast facilities outside of town using a septic system may need
further inspection by a building inspector.
3. Bed & Breakfast facilities using a private well shall have water sampled
annually.
4. If the capacity for foodservice is 10, domestic equipment will be allowed.
If more than 10, follow the ordinances for requirements.
5. Ask them to submit a copy of their menu.
6. Service of home canned food is prohibited.
7 No frying on the stove top without a commercial hood and fire suppression
system.
8. Preparation of Bacon in the microwave oven is approved.
9. No children or animals are allowed in the kitchen during food prep for
guests.
10. Use a hair restraint when preparing food.
11. Provide a stem type food thermometer, range CP - 220*.
12. Keep personal food separated from guest food as much as
refrigerator, and in dry storage.
13. Label all bulk food containers if ingredients are used in
of guest food.
14. Designate a handwashing sink in the food prep area. Provide soap, towels,
nailbrush.
15. Dishes/utensils shall be cleaned by using the 4 step manual method or a
dishmachine.

16. Wooden kitchen floors shall be sealed to facilitate cleaning.
17. Food prep counters with seams shall be sealed with silicone.
18. A thermometer shall be conspicuously located in the warmest part of the
refrigerator. 40* or less is the correct operating temperature.
19. Exterior garbage service shall be on an impervious base.
20. Provide an ABC rated fire extinguisher.
21. Provide smoke detectors in each sleeping room and on every level.
22. Windows that open shall be screened.
23. Mechanical or window ventilation is required in all bathrooms.
24. Hot water shall be at 130' or less.
25. Bathroom tub fixtures may not terminate below the floodrim.
26. New facilities shall provide toilet seats of sanitary design.
