HomeMy WebLinkAboutSchool Bus Stop Location Complaint Oakgreen and 55thJanuary 12, 1995 Mr. Michael Brabender Stillwater Bus Transportation 606 N. Main St. Stillwater, Mn. 55082 Dear Mr. Brabender, ncerely, Lindy Sduanson Chief of Police Copy: Jean Williams POLICE DEPARTMENT CITY OF OAK PARK HEIGHTS 14168 57TH STREET NORTH • P.O. BOX 2007 OAK PARK HEIGHTS, MINNESOTA 55082 TELEPHONE: (612) 439 -4723 FAX: (612) 439 -0574 EMERGENCY: 911 LINDY SWANSON CHIEF OF POLICE I recently received a telephone call in which a concerned parent voiced a concern on what she feels is a potentially hazardous situation at a local school bus stop. The school bus stop in question is located on Oakgreen Ave.N. at Oakridge Place N. and directly acrossthe street from that location which is Oakgreen Ave.N. and 55th St.N. The expressed concern was with the heavy amount of traffic on Oakgreen Ave. and the narrow road design. Twice this week I monitored the bus stops previously mention from 7:50 a.m. until the bus collected the children shortly after 8:00 a.m. On both occasions I observed the children on both sides of Oakgreen Ave.N. standing very near the edge of the roadway throwing snowballs back and forth. At this time I also observed almost non -stop traffic on this portion of Oakgreen Ave.N. After reviewing this matter I would ask that you consider any possible change at this particular collection point. Oakgreen Ave.N. is most definitely much busier than the average city street and the roadway appears to be narrower than most. With the increased residential area developement in this area I feel the number of children shall increase quarterly. I am aware that there have been discussions in the possi- bility of Oakgreen Ave.N. becoming a county roadway in an exchange program with Washington County. I have also "heard" that Oakgreen Ave. N. is facing an upgrade in design but have no idea when that might occur. The latter mentioned facts seem to prove that there is a problem with the design of Oakgreen Ave.N. vs the amount of traffic it is now handling. I respectfully request that you review this matter and reply. Box 2007 Stillwater, MN 55082 Dear Chief Swanson: I have received your letter expressing concern about the school bus stop at Oakgreen Ave. and 55th St. Dan Parker and I have observed the bus stop on three different days. We found the stop to be similar to many other stops in the district. The students are able to stand off the traveled roadway. The number of cars or their speed was not unusual. We also noticed that the majority of the cars are local residents, not through traffic. I have talked to two drivers that are familiar with the bus stop and they have not had problems at the stop such as cars running the stop arm. Students on the east side of the road were running around. I will be sending a letter to those families pointing out proper bus stop rules and also encouraging parent supervision. At this point we will not be changing the bus stop. The stop will continue to be monitored and a change can be made if conditions warrant. Oak Pa tk Heights, Mn. 55082 Dear Ms. Williams, POLICE DEPARTMENT CITY OF OAK PARK HEIGHTS 14168 57TH STREET NORTH • P.O. BOX 2007 OAK PARK HEIGHTS, MINNESOTA 55082 TELEPHONE: (612) 439 -4723 FAX: (612) 439 -0574 EMERGENCY: 911 As you are aware, I sent a letter to Mr. Michael Brabender, Director of Transportation for ISD 834, in regards to your concerns. I am enclosing a copy of the response I received. Obviously, at this time representatives for ISD 834 are not willing to make any changes. I believe a change would have been a positive move but can not document any more problems at this location than at any other location. Hopefully we can get this bus stop changed with the ever increasing growth in this area. I am sorry that I could not persuade the school officials to make the changes at this time. If I can be of service to you please contact me. Sincerely, Lindy wanson LINDY SWANSON CHIEF OF POLICE
