Johnson; Jim Butler; Scott Richards; Mark Vierling Subject: Fox Hallow Landscaping OPH Staff I have reviewed the landscape plan submitted for the Fox Hollow project (revision dated 8/16/05 and received by the city 2/16/06). I compared it to the last landscape plan I reviewed which was dated 6/15/05. I have the following comments regarding this plan: 1. There are fewer shrubs shown in the latest plan than in the previous one. Shrubs have been removed from the south side of the NE building. The total no. of shrubs proposed in this plan is 98 (167 previous plan). 2. All but one of the Japanese tree lilacs have been moved out of the parking lot medians and put in locations in planting areas at the edge of the parking lot and around buildings. This is a good choice. 3. There are fewer trees along the entrance drive; however, the same number of trees provide screening for the property to the south of Fox hollow. There are approximately the same number of trees on the current plan as the previous one. There is no change in the tree replacement requirement for this project. 4. The Planting Detail is generally good but should include removal of 113 of the wire basket from the root balls of deciduous trees once the trees have been placed in the planting holes. The Planting Detail also specifies for several types of trees, "do not place soil on top of the root balls" under the wood chip mulch. There should be some soil placed over the top of the ball under the mulch or the fine roots will dry out. The mulch is often not deep enough or is scraped or degrades away from the top of the root balls, the roots dry out, and the top of the tree dies back. 5. The plant list specifies pin oak (Quercus palustris). This is eastern pin oak which is not a native tree. Eastern pin oak suffers from iron chlorosis in the alkaline, clay soils in oak Park Heights. They should instead specify northern pin oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis) or another oak species which is native to this area. 6. This plan is still stamped "Preliminary, Not for Construction". Is that the case or is this the final landscape plan which will be used for construction? If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact me.
