305.6 Shaft and Exit Enclosures. Exits shall be enclosed as specified in Chapter 10. Elevator
shafts, vent shafts and other vertical openings shall be enclosed, and the enclosure shall be as speci-
fied in Section 711.
305.7 Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems. When required by Section 904.2.1 or other provisions
of this code, automatic sprinkler systems and standpipes shall be designed and installed as specified
in Chapter 9.
305.8 Special Hazards. Chimneys and heating apparatus shall conform to the requirements of
Chapter 31 of this code and the Mechanical Code.
Motion picture machine rooms shall conforrn to the requirements of Chapter 4.
All exterior openings in a boiler room or rooms containing central heating equipment, if located
below openings in another story or if less than 10 feet (3048 mm) from other doors or windows of
the same building, shall be protected by a fire assembly having a three-fourths-hour fire-protection
rating. Such fire assemblies shall be fixed, automatic closing or self-closing.
Class 1, II or III-A liquids shall not be placed, stored or used in Group E Occupancies, except in
approved quantities as necessary in laboratories and classrooms and for operation and maintenance
as set forth in the Fire Code.
305.9 Fire Alarm Systems. An approved fire alarm system shall be provided for Group E Occu-
pancies with an occupant load of 50 or more persons. In Group E Occupancies provided with an
automatic sprinkler or detection system, the operation of such system shall automatically activate
the school fire alarm system, which shall include an alarm mounted on the exterior of the building.

SECTION 306 — REQUIREMENTS FOR GROUP F OCCUPANCIES
306.1 Group F Occupancies Defined. Group F Occupancies shall include the use of a building or
structure, or a portion thereof, for assembling, disassembling, fabricating, finishing, manufactur-
ing, packaging, repair or processing operations that are not classified as Group H Occupancies. Fac-
tory and industrial occupancies shall include the following:
Division 1. Moderate-hazard factory and industrial occupancies shall include factory and indus-
trial uses which are not classified as Group F, Division 2 Occupancies, but are not limited to facili-
ties producing the following:
1. Aircraft.
2. Appliances.
3. Athletic equipment.
4. Automobiles and other motor vehicles.
5. Bakeries.
6. Alcoholic beverages.
7. Bicycles.
8. Boats.
9. Brooms and brushes.
10. Business machines.
11. Canvas or similar fabric.
12. Cameras and photo equipment.

13. Carpets and rugs, including cleaning.

Division 2. Low-hazard factory and industrial occupancies shall include facilities producing
noncombustible or nonexplosive materials which, during finishing, packing or processing, do not
involve a significant fire hazard, including, but not limited to, the following:
1. Nonalcoholic beverages.
2. Brick and masonry.
3. Ceramic products.
4. Foundries.
5. Glass products.
6. Gypsum.

DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPANCY
A building or portion of a building having an assembly room with an occupant
load of 1,000 or more and a legitimate stage.
A building or portion of a building having an assembly room with an occupant
load of less than 1,000 and a legitimate stage.
A building or portion of a building having an assembly room with an occupant
load of 300 or more without a legitimate stage, including such buildings used for
educational purposes and not classed as a Group E or Group B Occupancy.
Any building or portion of a building having an assembly room with an occupant
load of less than 300 without a legitimate stage, including such buildings used for
educational purposes and not classed as a Group E or Group B Occupancy.
Stadiums, reviewing stands and amusement park structures not included within
other Group A Occupancies.
A building or structure, or a portion thereof, for office, professional or service -type
transactions, including storage of records and accounts, and eating and drinking
establishments with an occupant load of less than 50.
Any building used for educational purposes through the 12th grade by 50 or more
persons for more than 12 hours per week or four hours in any one day.
Any building used for educational purposes through the 12th grade by less than 50
persons for more than 12 hours per week or four hours in any one day.
Any building or portion thereof used for day -care purposes for more than six
persons.
Moderate- hazard factory and industrial occupancies include factory and industrial
uses not classified as Group F, Division 2 Occupancies.
Low - hazard factory and industrial occupancies include facilities producing
noncombustible or nonexplosive materials which during finishing, packing or
processing do not involve a significant fire hazard.
Occupancies with a quantity of material in the building in excess of those listed in
Table 3 -D which present a high explosion hazard as listed in Section 307.1.1.
Occupancies with a quantity of material in the building in excess of those listed in
Table 3 -D which present a moderate explosion hazard or a hazard from accelerated
burning as listed in Section 307.1.1.
Occupancies with a quantity of material in the building in excess of those listed in
Table 3 -D which present a high fire or physical hazard as listed in Section 307.1.1.

Aircraft repair hangars not classified as Group S, Division 5 Occupancies and
heliports.
Semiconductor fabrication facilities and comparable research and development
areas when the facilities in which hazardous production materials are used, and the
aggregate quantity of material is in excess of those listed in Table 3 -D or 3 -E.
Occupancies having quantities of materials in excess of those listed in Table 3 -E
that are health hazards as listed in Section 307.1.1.

1306.0100 SPECIAL FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS (OPTIONAL).

Subpart 1. General. This part authorizes optional
provisions for the installation of on-premises fire suppression
systems in new buildings, buildings s increased in floor area an
buildings which have t e occu anc classification chan ed.
Subp. 2. Municipal option. The sprinkler system
requirements in subpart 3 may be adopted with the selection of
either item "8" or item "8a" based on local fire suppression
capabilities,'but without further change by a municipality which
has adopted the code. When adopted, the requirements are
applicable throughout the municipality for new buildings,
buildings increased in floor area, and buildings which will have
the occupancy classification changed.
Subp. 3. Requirements. Automatic sprinkler systems must
be installed and maintained in operable condition in buildings
in the occupancy classifications listed in items 1 through 11.
For purposes of this chapter, area separation walls do not

stated in the following items estab1 where the
provisions apply; in the case of mixed occupancies the threshold
number of the most restrictive occupancy applies to the entire
building, except for minor additions that do not increase the
occupant load or significantly increase the fire load.
1. Group A-1 occupancies.
2. Group A-2 occupancies with an occupant load of 300 or
more.
3. Group A-2.1 occupancies.
4. Group A-3 occupancies with an accumulative occupant
load of 300 or more.
5. Group S-3 service stations with 3,000 or more gross
square feet of floor area, not including canopies.
6. Group S-3 parking garages with 5,000 or more gross
square feet of floor area.
7. Group 13 offices and postsecondary classrooms with 8,500
or more gross feet of floor area or three or more stories in
height.
8. Group M mercantile, S storage, or F factory occupancies
with 2,000 or more gross square feet of floor area or three or
more stories in height.

9. Group E-1 and E-2 occupancies with 8,500 or more gross

11. Group R -1 apartment houses, hotels, and motels with
8,500 or more gross square feet of floor area or with dwelling
units or guest rooms on three or more floors.
Subp. 4. Standard. Automatic sprinkler systems must
comply with the applicable standard referenced in UBC Section
904. When a public water supply is not available, an alternate
on-site source of water supply which meets with the approval of
the building official and fire chief shall be provided.
Subp. 5. Substitute construction. The installation of an
automatic sprinkler system as required by this chapter does not
preclude the substitution of one -hour fire - resistive
construction as permitted in UBC Section 508.
