Re: Landscaping -- Shoppes of Oak Park Heights
6/20/05
During the past two weeks I have visited the site of the Shoppes of Oak Park
Heights several times to evaluate the condition of the landscaping which has been
installed on the site for both Phase 1 and Phase 2. After completion of the inspections I
have the following observations and recommendations:
Phase 2
building
top of ball and around
base of trunk
junipers
E side of Coldstone
Creamery building
at least 4 are half dead
Replace any which are at least half
brown
honeylocust
Phase 2
slow to leaf out
most are continuing to produce leaves —
re-evaluate at end of growing season for
possible replacement

Conclusion

Replace
Trees were planted incorrectly
originally and re- planted after the
first inspection — poor planting with
exposed root balls caused root
damage -- Replace trees with new
Fraser fir or Black Hills' spruce in
good condition and plant them
properly (burlap and twine
removed and root balls covered with
soil and mulch)
Replace if more than 1/3 of tree is
brown; water trees well once per
week for first 2 growing seasons
(May 1- Oct. 1) unless there is at
least .5 in. rainfall
Mulch trees with 4 -6 inches of wood
chip mulch from just outside trunk

especially
more toward
east end
10 trees
some of shrubs are dead,
others have a lot of
dieback — at least 18
plants affected
to 6 inches past branch spread —
this will help root systems retain
water and help trees avoid drying
Replace those dead or mostly dead,
prune others; water shrubs well
once per week unless there is at least
.5 in. rainfall

Work should be done as soon as is feasible. If replacement plants cannot be put in before
July 1 and watered well once per week (sprinkler system is not necessarily adequate), re-
planting lanting should be done after August 15 I am available to meet with representatives of
the development and landscape contractors to explain problems or recommendations if
they are unclear to them. Some work may have been done since my latest inspection, and
references to the problems which have been corrected can be disregarded.
