Monday, August 16, 20110 at City Hall
I. Gall to Order: Chair Eder called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Present: Vice Chair
I- lauble, Commissioner Krieger: City Administrator Johnson, Public Works Director Kegley,
Arborist Widin, and Commission I-,iaison McC:omber. Absent Commissioners Viers and
Niedzolkowski.
II. Approval of A�_ Chair Uder added "Set Tinge and Date for Park Walkthrough" as New
Business Item A. and "Discuss Parks Commissioner Vacancy" as New Business Itern 13.
Vice Chair I lauble, seconded by Commissioner Krieger, moved to approve the Agenda as
amended. Carried 3 -0.

Commissioner Krieger, moved to approve the minutes. Carried 3 -0.
IV. Del aril . ci t /Con�missic�n Liaison ReoortsT
A. Ar Arborist Widin reported that the ceremonial Tree City USA tree planting
occurred on August 3 at Brekke Park. Widin reported there will be a tree planting pit
the end of August in boulevards and parks,
Widin reported she was working on a list of'the final fifty ash trees to be removed as
part Of the structured removal in anticipation for the coming of Emerald Ash Borer.
She stated that the insect had not been confirmed in Oak Park 1- leights.
Arborist Widin stated she had been responding to various calls and questions from
residents. She stated the most popultir question were regarding the Japanese Beetle.
Widin stated the insect feeds on many diJTcrent plaints, particularly river birch, paper
birch, anything in tilt rose family, and grapes. Widin stated the only way to control
there at this point was insecticide.
Vice Chair I- Iauble, seconded by Commissioner Krieger, moved to approve the
Arborist report. Carried 3 -0.
13. Publi Wo Dir e ct or: Public Works Director Kegley reported that the horseshoe pit
rehabilitation at Valley View Park was completed. Kegley reported that picnic tables
and garbage cans were ordered. Ile stated the picnic tables would be assembled the
following week and placed at Cover Park.
Kegley reported the Park rind 'frail Guides were being printed, and the trail herd sign
posts Have been installed.
Public Works Director Kegley reported that the City received a request from VAA to

City Administrator Johnson since the Parks Commission did not meet the previous
month.

V11. New Business:
A. Set _fire and Date for Paz'1<Walkthrout -ll: The Parks Commission discussed possible
dates fora Fall Park Walkthrough. They tcmatively scheduled the \valkthl'Oug11 for
eilhcr Saturday, September 1 1 m Saturday, September 18 at 9:00 a.m. beginning at
Cover Park. Staff eras directed to confirm the walkthrough date alter discussions
with the Parks Coll) missioners who were not present at the mee.tiog that evening.
I.3. Discuss ---P Commissioner Vacancy: Chair Eder directed staff to promote that
there was a vacancy on the Parts Commission. City Administrator Johnson stated
that if interviews were scheduled for October, an announcement of the vacancy could
be placed in the newsletter that would be mailed at the end of September. Chair h"der
thanked Denise Niedzoll<owski oil behalf ofthe harks Commission for serving as a
C.'ommissiOnei'.
VIII. Old B usiness:
A. Brekke Park Basketball Court: City Administrator .Johnson reported that the City
requested quotes for a basketball court at Brekke Park. Ile states{ that one quote was
receiver]. Johnson reviewed the quote and stated that there was not enough money in
the 2010 budget. Fle stated the quoted price was locked through Rune 2011, so the
Parks Commission may convey this as a priority to the City Council for the 2011
budget if they so wishes {.
Chair Eder stated his recommendation was to proceed with Alternate 3, and
determine from the City Council if funding was available.
The Parks Commission discussed the possibility of installing; one pole; on the east or
west side of the Brekke Park pleasure rink for half-court play. City Administrator
Johnson stated that if they did not do any striping, the installation could possibly be
done in- (louse.

Vice Chair Ilauble, seconded by Commissioner Krieger, moved to direct staff to
investigate the in -house cost of a basketball pole and goal to be placed on either the
east side of west side of the pleasure rink with the intent that it would be available by
Spring 2011. Carried 3 -0.
B. Play 1'ul Cite JM -.: City Administrator Johnson reported that the City of Oak Park
Heights was designated as a Playful City. Commission Liaison MGComber reported
that there have been grant opportunities through Kaboom in the ]last, but the
applicant needed to be designated as a Playful City. She stated there were
playgrounds within Oak Part: Heights that were in need, and future grant
oppor•tunitics May become available.
C. 2010 Part: and "frail Survev: City Administrator .Johnson reviewed the survey results.
Chair !;der suggested trails be marked for distances. Ile stated that most respondents
were pleased with the bark and trial system. He stated he would be willing to
volunteer his time to measure some- ofthe trails.
