The fire protection class changed from a Group M Occupancies (Mercantile) to a Group B Occupancies (Businesses). The sprinkler density is greater in a Group M than the Group B. With Herbergers still on the East side of the mall there is a mixed group class. Herbergers is still in a Group M. There are no special fire separation requirements for an M to a B. This fire sprinkler system is designed in what we call a pipe schedule system. This is a fire protection sprinkler system that is based off of the number of heads, distance to the main, water main pressure, and required sprinkler density. The new fire protection sprinkler systems are based off of the same criteria but with a computer program. The pipe schedule systems have a high level of safety factor built into the calculations. The mall sprinkler system is still based off a Group M sprinkler density and a pipe - schedule system which is well above the required density factor for the sprinklers if the Mall was to be built today as an office building, a Group B. It is sprinkled above and below all the ceilings, a requirement do to the open area between the suspended ceilings. All the sprinkler risers are monitored for water flow and all air handling units have smoke detection. The building is divided into 10 sprinkler zones and 5 fire department connections. There is a fire hydrant within the required distance to each fire department location. The one open issue is the location of fire hydrants on the property and the water main pipe size. Andersen Corporation has reviewed with me the construction prints and pipe sizes on the print. By the prints there are 3 water mains coming into the building. (2) 8" water mains coming from Osgood and (1) 8" water main coming from 60th street. There is good fire hydrant spacing except for the North side of the building. There is no hydrant between the hydrant on Omaha Ave. and the hydrant in front of Herbergers on the North side. Based off the sprinkler system, the building fire loading, the building usage as a Group B, and the locations of emergency exits and lighting I don't see a life safety problem. Therefore I'm not requiring the Andersen Corporation to add an additional hydrant at this time.
