Oak Park Heights, MN 55082 Dear Mr. Mordick, I am sorry about the loss of your garage and severe damage to your home from the fire that occurred last week. I was able to do a site visit of your property and wish to inform you of what options you have to comply with the requirements of the City's Building & Zoning Ordinances. Your first option may be to demolish the damaged structure and rebuild a new home. If you choose to do this, the following steps should be taken: 1) Obtain a building permit for the demolition of the structure and please note that the contractor is required to be licensed with the City. 2) Should you decide to build on the existing foundation it would have to be inspected by a MN State Licensed Structural Engineer. 3) The new structure would require a building permit and must comply with today's Building Codes. Your second option would be salvaging the structure, and with this the following would be required: 1) Obtain a building permit for the demolition parts of the structure and please note that the contractor is required to be licensed with the City. 2) Remove the roof in its entirety (trusses, decking, and shingles). 3) Remove all the siding, soffits, and fascia. 4) Remove all the sheetrock, insulation, electrical wiring, all outlet boxes, fixtures, plumbing fixtures, water and waste piping, mechanical equipment, and duct work. 5) The flooring appeared to be badly damaged from the water and must be removed. 6) The structural wood frame and building foundation must be inspected by a structural engineer and a report of findings and /or corrections is to be submitted to me for review. 7) Any of the structure and foundation that is salvaged must be sanitized and sealed by a contractor that is licensed to do such work. 8) An additional building permit is required for the remodeling of the home and all construction must comply with today's Building Code. 9) The necessary areas shall be securely fenced off and the home locked up. Should there be vandals breaking windows, you will be required to board up all the windows. If you have any questions, please contact me at ibutler @cityofoakparkheights.com or at 651- 275 -9590.
