Johnson; Jim Butler; Scott Richards; Mark Vierling Subject: Lowe's Landscaping OPH Staff W On Tues. 4110107 I inspected the installed landscaping at the site of the new Lowe's building in Oak Park Heights. I have the following observations and recommendations concerning the landscaping: 1. The plant material which has been installed looks very good, with good form for each species. Most of the plant material appears to be alive and will be checked for viability later in the growing season. 2. I randomly inspected trees and shrubs to check the planting method used. All plants inspected appeared to have been planted properly. 3. The landscaping on site varied a little bit from the approved plan (undated) which was received by the city in early November 2005; however the changes were not significant. 4. The plants installed compared favorably to the approved plan in terms of species and numbers with the exception of the south berm behind the building. No concolor fir were included in the planting on the south berm. Colorado spruce and "Black Hills" white spruce were the two evergreen tree species planted on the berm. 5. One bicolor (swamp white) oak on the west side of the building has been staked improperly and the plastic covered wire will eventually girdle the trunk. If this tree still needs to be staked, it should be done properly, using wide nylon webbing around the trunk. 6. Some of the deciduous trees on site, especially the maples on the S and E sides of the property, still have paper tree wrap on the trunks. This wrap should be removed by the end of April and should only be on the trunks from Nov. thru March in subsequent years. 7. There is a mountain ash in the N end of the NE median in the parking lot which has been broken off at the ground (snowplow ?) and is lying on the median. This tree should be removed and replaced. 8. Eric Johnson (OPH City Administrator) mentioned that the City was requiring Lowe's to put in more landscaping for screening the truck loading dock on the SW corner of the building.
