The major shade tree planned for the site is "Autumn Blaze" maple. In the interest of preventing future problems and improving sustainability of the landscape, the City of OPH would like to see more diversity in the shade trees proposed for the site and have at least one other type of shade tree, other than maple, replace some of the AB maple. Suggestions would be: northern pin oak, bicolor oak, linden (American basswood) or honeylocust. "Autumn Blaze" maple is Acer x freemanii (rubrum x saccharinum), not Acer platanoides as listed in the plant list. 2. The city would like to see the number of Japanese barberry shrubs reduced and replaced with several other types of shrubs to increase diversity in the landscape and decrease potential for invasive plant movement. Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) is considered a terrestrial invasive plant by the MN Dept. of Natural Resources due to its propensity to become established and spread as a shrub layer plant in native oak woodlands. 3. The "Planting Detail" should also include the language "remove top rungs (1/3 -1/2) of any wire basket enclosing the root ball of B &B stock before back filling planting hole ". Site will be inspected for proper tree planting and the accepted planting detail will be enforced. 4. It looks like trees will be removed from the SW portion of the site. The parcel is greater than 1 A in size. If it also contains at least 5 significant trees (deciduous trees over 8 in. in diameter, cottonwood and silver maple over 20 in. in diameter, conifers over 10 ft. in ht.), a tree survey and tree protection plan will be required per the city's Tree Protection Ordinance 1307. Boxelder, buckthorn and Siberian elm are not considered significant. A list of significant trees to be removed, listing species and trunk diameter, should be included with the submittals. Tree replacement may be required, depending on the amount of tree removal offset by trees to be planted according to the approved landscape plan. Screening for residential neighborhood to west and south will be required to be maintained to the level required by city zoning code. 5. A list of rain garden plants, by species and common name, and type of planting stock, should be included as an addendum to the landscape plan. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this review and report. Please forward my comments to the developer.
