HomeMy WebLinkAboutCapital Improvement Projects 1999 TO: Kimberly Kamper, Administrative Assistant MEMO FROM: Lindy Swanson, Chief of Police DATE: 09/17/99 RE: Capital Improvement Program - Police Department Below I shall list the anticipated needs of the Police Department in regards to the CIP. The needs are basically the same as previously listed, and may actually be less. 1) Replace emergency warning siren located at Beach Rd. & 61st St.N. We had updated this siren approx. five years ago due to damage previously received to the unit as the result of a storm. I believe we can get five more years of service from this unit. However, we have converted one siren to straight DC power so that it will still function without electricity, have ordered another siren (Kern Center) that will be straight DC power, and in the extremely near future the siren here at City Hall will be tied into our power so in the event of a power outage it will be able to run off of our generator. Next year, 2000, it might be a good idea to convert the east siren to straight DC and have the technicians check the unit condition overall. This conversion would cost approx. $5000.00 as compared to a new unit at approx. $19,000.00 2) Radio System replacement. Should the Washington County Sheriff's Dept. switch over to the 800 Megahurst Trunk Radio System, we would need to purchase all new radioes for squad cars, portables, and dispatch. This would be 7 vehicle radioes, six portables, and one base station. All units are nearly the same price at approx. $4,000.00 per unit with a total cost, including tax, at approx. $60,000.00 In the last several months I have received several updates from Washington County and at this time it looks like they are nol going to be changing to the 800 Megahurst Trunk Radio System, so unless they reverse themselves, we will not realize this expense. 3) Law Enforcement/Fire Training Facility. As you are aware, I have been serving on a Steering Committee for a new training facility. As of this time, costs have jumped to $9,000,000 rather then the original $6,000,000. We are still studying this and looks like we are going to try to have Ramsey County & St. Paul join us to lower costs. Financing of this project has not been determined. 4) Police Station. We are at maximum space utilization of our facility and with anticipated growth, we may need expanded Police Dept. building facilities.
