RE:Allowable joist cantilever length
Dear Bill:
You had requested that we provide a structural analysis of the stresses associated with cantilevering
deck joists three feet. Our analysis was based on the 1994 Uniform Building Code which had adopted
the 1991 National Design Specifications (NDS). The allowable design values for both 2x8 and 2x10,
#2 southern yellow pine joists were used in determining allowable stresses. Calculations assume a
dead load of 10 pounds per square foot,and a live load of 60 pounds per square foot.
A three foot cantilever using 2x8 floor joists at 16"o/c or 2x10 floor joists at 24"o/c are well within
the allowable bending and shear stresses of the Building Code. In both cases, the deflections are well
within the allowable deflection of L/240.
We recommend the acceptance of cantilevers up to and including three feet for the species of wood
listed above.
