Five years later, in 2006, I was told by the City Inspector that I had not had a final inspection, and the steps to the deck did not meet State regulations. In the spring of 2007, I removed the existing steps and completely reconstructed them, adding a handrail and spindles as required by the State. While constructing the new steps to the. deck, I miscalculated an allowance for the very top step, which resulted in a riser deficiency of 1-1/4" on the step Ieading to the deck platform. Complying with the regulation would require that I disassemble the staircase, including the spindles and railings. At this point, I don't understand what this would achieve, because I feel the staircase is exceptionally sturdy and does not impose a safety hazard to my family or the public in general. I would certainly consider adding a more graspable handrail to the present railing, as it may add to the safety of anyone using the staircase. Enclosed are pictures for your evaluation. It is my hope that the City will allow me to enjoy the steps as they are. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Sincerely, JLJ James F. Siavik Enc.
