There has been a question as to how close utility trenches and other construction activity can come to the oaks and still avoid injury. I inspected the trees for their condition, especially their structural integrity. There are eight large oaks in that area. Six are in fair or fair to good condition and should be preserved, if possible. Two are in poor to very poor condition and should be removed. The large bur oak with a previous trunk failure on east side and cracks in trunk should be removed immediately. The pin oak in poor condition should be removed as soon as feasible. When removing the trees during the growing season, care should be taken to avoid wounding the other oaks which are to be preserved. If trees are wounded or need pruning from April 1st - Oct. 1 5th, wounds should be painted with latex paint or varnish to avoid insect transmission of th e oak wilt fungus. The developer should advise the tree removal contractor of these instructions. In order to avoid excessive root injury to these trees, all construction activity should ideally be at least 20 feet or more from the trunks on all sides. Fifteen feet from the trunks should be the maximum encroachment, or the trees will decline and may also become structurally unstable due to root cutting. If the utilities could be bored under the root systems, that would be best. The trees currently in that location (going from south to north) are as follows: 1. bur oak 38 in. -- fair to good condition - Save 2, bur oak 24 in. -- fair condition - Save 3. pin oak 20 in. - poor condition, trunk decay, trunk and basal defects - Remove 4. bur oak 36 in. -- fair to good condition - Save 5. bur oak 30 in. - fair to good condition - Save 6. bur oak 40 in. - very poor condition - decay, previous trunk failure on east side, vertical cracks in trunk - risk to roadway vehicles /pedestrians Remove immediately 7. bur oak 32 in. - fair to good condition - Save 8. bur oak 32 in. - fair to good condition - Save Dead wood in canopies of remaining oaks should be pruned out between Nov. 1st and March 1 5th. Road will probably need to be closed for removal of the risk trees. Please notify the developer regarding the necessity to remove the oaks in poor condition.
