Not only am I happy, but I will tell you that the paper would probably have a field day with ( "geothermal system destroys area blackberry picking! "), not to mention some important remnant native plants and wildlife habitat. Thank you for bringing this to the committee. I can put together some recommendations for native plantings /seeding in areas of disturbance once the construction has been completed. Protective fencing will also be necessary between native plants and trees and the construction activity. My foot is doing o.k.. The surgery went fine and I stopped taking pain meds by Sunday, so life is good. Cabin fever will probably be my worst problem. My husband got me a walker /scooter that I can rest my bad leg on and scoot all over the main floor. It's definitely better than crutches! You'll be happy to know that I will soon (next week) be finishing the OPH 2008 report and 2009 work plan. When I can walk better on crutches (or my own foot) I'll be back to staff meetings. Probably 3- 4 weeks. Let me know if you need any other tree or plant info.. Say hi to the gang there. Widin [kdwidin @comcast.net] t: Wednesday, February 04, 2009 5:25 PM To: Eric Johnson Subject: Geothermal Wells and Ponding Under Power Lines Eric - After looking at the most recent proposed plans for the OPH City Hall construction today, it is apparent that the wells for the geothermal system as well as a stormwater pond are planned for the area on the north side of the trail under the power lines behind the current City Hall. This is an area which has a temporary vernal pond and also a number of different species of remnant prairie plants, both herbaceous and woody. I have not done an inventory of plants or trees in this area, or in the area east of the trail behind city hall, since I was not aware of any construction activity in those areas. The area east of the trail behind City Hall has a lot of tree cover, which will provide screening for the residences to the SE of the new City Hall. If the geothermal system and ponding cannot be put on the southern part of the city property, then it would be better to put them in the open area under the power lines, but perhaps the area of construction could be minimized. It would be a good idea to check the MN County Biological Survey data for any rare plants in the proposed construction area. It also would be a good idea to have the remnant area assessed by someone highly experienced in native prairie and wetland species, such as Jyneen Thatcher of the Washington Conservation District. Unfortunately, I will be having foot surgery 2/5 and will not be able to be involved in any inventories or assessments in these areas until probably April.
