Winkler; 'Steve Gansmoe' Subject: RE: Test Results The mortar test results you recently received intentionally don't have a specified strength or a comment indicating whether it meets or doesn't meet the specifications. Here' our explanation. The plans indicate that Type S mortar is to be used for above grade mortar and Type S mortar in ASTM C 270 (which is a laboratory method, not a field strength method) indicates an average 28 day strength of 1,800 psi. Our test result had an average strength of 2,360 psi. However, in the ASTM C 780 procedure, Section 1.4, (which is the field strength method) it says that `the test results obtained under this test method are not required to meet the minimum compressive values in accordance with the property specifications in Specification C 270 ". This is why we intentionally don't indicate whether it meets or doesn't meet, we only say it's for informational purposes. It is our opinion that there is not a good test method for determining the strength of mortar, but specifications indicate it should be tested. We believe that block prisms are a much better way of indicating what the wall strength is. It is our experience that the in -place mortar is typically higher than cylinder or cube testing because the block absorbs water from the mortar, which decreases the water /cement ratio and results in higher strengths than cylinder or cube testing. This being said, with the average strength of 2,360 psi on the recent test results, you're in very good shape. The in -place strength is likely higher. Where this becomes an issue, for example, would be if the average cylinder strength had been 1,600 psi and we had to say it did not meet specifications, when the in -place strength are likely fine.
