Removal of trees b Au 20th, then plantin of replacement spruce b Sept. 30th is acceptable. The trees which are planted should be mulched with 4-6 in. of wood chip mulch from just outside trunk to branch spread and the trees should be watered well via a hose at the g round line, each root ball soaked at waterin once ever two weeks until the end of October, unless more than one-half inch of rain is received durin a two-week period. Water is critical for transplanted trees, especiall for the first several y ears of g rowth in a new location. Supplemental waterin should continue for these trees for the first two g rowin g seasons, ever week or two, Ma throu September, dependin on rainfall totals. Kath Widin OPH Arborist ' Julie A. Stephan Stagecoach Property Landscaping Julie. Soon the School District will be submitting requests for construction permits for electrical plug -ins and for installation of the fuel tank. Since the tree replacements are a condition to receiving construction permits I am making the following request. Regarding the tree replacement timing I would like to proceed as follows: * Remove the 34 trees by August 20 o Removal several weeks prior to planting is requested because access to removals will be more difficult once the rest of the buses arrive. Plant the new (replacement) trees in September, but no later than September 30 o Planting several weeks after removal is requested because by mid- September a fresh batch of newly dug nursery spruce will be available rather than planting in August using trees that were dug last spring. Also, September weather is more conducive to evergreen planting compared to August planting. With the above understanding, I request that the construction permit process be allowed to proceed unhindered by the tree planting schedule. I concur with the conditions stated by the City Arborist. They have depicted replacement spruce () along the Stagecoach Trail frontage and 27 along the N edge of the property (after removal of existing poor quality spruce and Siberian elm). The replacement trees should be "Black Hills" white spruce or Norway spruce, not Colorado spruce, due to disease problems with the latter. Trees should receive supplemental water (hose at ground line) every week during Ist two growing seasons, unless more than 112 inch of rain falls during the week. The Planting Detail is acceptable, though up to an inch of soil should be placed on the top of each root ball to cover fine roots, followed by 3 inches of shredded bark mulch. Please forward my comments to the developer. Contact me if you have any questions regarding this review. Kathy Widin Arborist City of Oak Park Heights 8/8/2008
