Widin [kwidin@mmmpcc.or Sent: Frida Februar 08, 2002 12:19 PM To: kdanielson@cit Subject: SAHS Stadium Landscapin FILE COPY Kris - Here is a cop of the memo I sent to Scott. Kath I have reviewed the plan for the trees around the proposed SANS stadium and have visited the site. I have the followin comments: 1. Trees to be protected or transplanted: The spruce trees, both those indicated to be protected in place, and those which are to be transplanted, are not in ver g ood condition. Man of the white spruce have severe dama from y ellow-headed spruce sawfl and the Colorado spruce are sufferin from drou stress, Rhizosphaera needlecast and C canker. Of the 12 trees indicated on sheet C1 to be protected in place, 6 are essentiall dead or in ver poor condition. Of the 17 trees indicated on sheet C1 to be transplanted on site, 7 are in ver poor condition. Trees which are in poor condition are not g ood candidates for either preservation or transplantin M recommendation would be to remove the trees which are in ver poor condition, and onl protect or transplant trees which are health and attractive in appearance. Additional ever ma need to either be purchased or transplanted from the Environmental Learnin Center in order to replace the 13 trees which will need to be removed. 2. Trees alon west propert line and berm: Plantin new or transplanted ever alon the propert boundar to the west of the stadium is a g ood idea. At this time, 10 trees are indicated on the landscape plan to be added to that area. I recommend doublin the number to 20 and usin trees which are at least 8 feet in hei These trees could be planted on the stadium side of the berm on level g round. Onl health trees of attractive appearance should be used and I recommend var the species b addin some white or red pine to the spruce. 3. Tree maintenance after plantin Trees which are planted nurser stock or transplanted from elsewhere on site, will need to be watered well at plantin time and at least once per week durin the first two g rowin g seasons, dependin on weather conditions. Ever of this size ( 8-16 feet tall will each re at least 20 g allons of water a week, provided in one or two waterin Trees should be mulched with 4 inches of woodchip mulch from j ust outside the trunk to j ust be the branch spread. 4. Su for vines on boundar fence: There was a su to add vines to the existin fence. This would have no effect on either noise or si abatement, particularl since leaves will not be on the vines during most of the times that ti stadium would be used (fall and spring). The vines would also require maintenance which could better be spent on maintaining the transplanted evergreens to be used for screening. Some native vines, such as Virginia creeper and riverbank grape, will undoubtedly seed in along the fence and grow naturally. In conclusion, the SANS project will require removal of 13 trees and the planting /transplanting of 23 (13 replacements and 10 additional). Kathy Widin Municipal Arborist City of Oak Park Heights
